Assesses the major contributions of four Latin American artists to the development of modernist idioms integrating European and New World aesthetics, presenting good color reproductions of 94 paintings and other works by Rivera (1886-1957), Torres-Garcia (1874-1949), Lam (1902-1982) and Matta (b. 1911) that illustrate their adaptation of Cubist, Constructivist and Surrealist vocabularies to explore themes related to their cultural heritages. In addition to an introductory discussion of the international influence exerted by their multicultural modes of expression, the catalogue features two critical essays on each artist that examine their years in Europe and trace the development of their individual styles.
