OP FIN DE SIECLE: GENERAL IDEA. Wurttembergischer Kunstverein, Stuttgart, 1992. Organized in association with Centre d'Art Santa Monica, Barcelona; Kunstverein, Hamburg; Power Plant, Toronto; Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio State University, Columbus; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. 104 pp. with 98 ills. (72 col., 2 foldout). 29 x 22 cm. In English; preface and five essays also in German.
Surveying provocative works of the last decade by the Canadian artist team General Idea (AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal), this catalogue presents illustrations of serial paintings, multiples and mixed-media installations which range from an AIDS logo based on Robert Indiana's LOVE painting to test-pattern wallpaper and heraldic badges addressing social and political issues. Six texts examine the artistic and cultural attitudes reflected in the "work-in-progress" character of the group's multifaceted projects, discussing their appropriation and manipulation of mainstream cultural icons and the implications of the pseudo-commercial form of their multiples.
