TURNER AND BYRON. David Blayney Brown. Tate Gallery, London, 1992. Distributed in the U.S.A. by University of Washington Press, Seattle. 136 pp. with 129 ills. (16 col.). 28 x 22 cm. LC 92-223972 In English.
The first thorough study of the significant body of work produced by Turner (1775-1851) in response to the poetry of Byron (1788-1824), this catalogue presents reproductions and individual discussions of some 100 paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints by Turner and other 19th-century British artists, including depictions of Classical ruins and numerous views of European scenes related to the poet's life and writings. A substantial scholarly text discusses the artistic and philosophical affinities between Byron and Turner and examines the painter's illustrations for Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and other works by the poet.
