Documenting a major retrospective of paintings, watercolors and prints by important Canadian artist Milne (1882-1953), this catalogue features fine reproductions of 150 landscapes, still lifes, cityscapes and other works illustrating the personal expressionism developed by the artist over the course of his largely reclusive career in Canada and the United States. Extensive excerpts from Milne's letters and unpublished papers accompany seven substantial essays discussing his formative years in New York, the painterly concerns central to his oeuvre, the long-delayed public recognition of his work, and the progression toward abstraction evident in his late compositions.
