Documents a broad array of works related to the elaborate festivals, ceremonial processions and tournaments sponsored by Lorenzo de' Medici (1449-1492) in late 15th-century Florence, including arms and armor, musical instruments, manuscripts, and numerous paintings of religious and civic pageants by Botticelli, Gozzoli and other artists. Scholarly commentaries on the works augment short texts introducing the catalogue's seven thematic sections while five well-illustrated essays discuss the political and cultural significance of public festivals, the depiction of heraldic symbols of the Medici in paintings and architectural ornamentation, tournaments and jousts in the Laurentian era, and other topics.
