Providing an outstanding survey of Florentine drawing in the era of Lorenzo de' Medici (1449-1492), this scholarly catalogue features color reproductions of some 185 works selected from the Uffizi's extensive holdings and from international collections, including figure and drapery sketches, renderings of Classical sculpture, anatomical and botanical studies, portraits, landscapes and architectural designs. An introductory essay discussing the functions of drawing in 15th-century Italy is accompanied by extensive individual commentaries on the works (arranged to illustrate the diverse applications of the medium) and concise biographical profiles of the 29 artists represented, among them Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Signorelli, Uccello, Verrocchio and Filippino Lippi.
