Thoroughly reviews the complex oeuvre of Brazilian avant-garde artist Oiticica (1937-1980), whose enigmatic colored box assemblages, labyrinthine architectural installations and cape-like garment sculptures reflect his links both to the cultural traditions of Brazil and to early trends in Conceptual, Minimal and body art. Extensive pictorial documentation of Oiticica's innovative objects, performance pieces and installations is supplemented by numerous texts and commentaries by the artist and by four essays (one reprinted) discussing his career in Rio de Janeiro and New York, the philosophical and social concerns central to his work, and his position in the context of Brazilian art of the 1960s and 70s.
