Offering a fine pictorial overview of the oeuvre of important German artist Baselitz (b. 1938), this catalogue features excellent reproductions of 41 paintings, 75 works on paper and three carved sculptures selected to illustrate the full range of his expressive style and figurative motifs, from his early "hero" portraits and his well-known inverted figure studies to his recent nature-based abstractions. Three introductory essays evaluate the social and historical themes unifying the artist's work, discuss his use of hero images, and analyze his aesthetic concerns.
