Showcasing a wide array of 19th-century Native American artifacts from the outstanding collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts, this catalogue features excellent pictorial and textual documentation of some 220 garments, weapons, beaded objects, pipes, tools, vessels and other works produced by North American Woodland, Prairie and Plains tribes. Supplemented by more than 30 concise texts on individual groups of works in the exhibition, seven essays discuss ethnographic and historical issues and describe the lives and philosophies of collectors Milford Chandler (1889-1981) and Richard Pohrt (b. 1911).
