More than 80 paintings are reproduced in this first substantial examination of the work of French Realist Gervex, best known for his provocative Rolla (a depiction of a boudoir scene) which was removed from the 1878 Salon on moral grounds. Supplemented by a lengthy illustrated biography, nine scholarly essays discuss Gervex's integration of traditional and progressive elements in his portraits and his popular depictions of Parisian life, his success in winning government commissions, and key individual works, among them a monumental historical mural he produced in collaboration with Alfred Stevens.
