Thoroughly surveying the history of the artist postcard from watercolor images produced by Emil Nolde in the 1890s to a series of 1991 prints on wood veneer by Jenny Holzer, this catalogue provides full-sized color reproductions of 113 drawings, paintings, collages and other works by more than 50 international artists, including Kirchner, Munch, Schwitters, Heckel, Pechstein, Grosz and such postwar figures as Cy Twombly, Gunter Brus and On Kawara. Includes a selectively illustrated checklist of nearly 500 works (many accompanied by descriptive commentaries) and eight essays which analyze the significance of the artist postcard, describe its extensive use in the Dada and Fluxus movements, and individually discuss contributions to the art form by Franz Marc, Joseph Beuys, Horst Janssen and Ray Johnson.
