Showcases selections from the National Gallery's notable collection of paintings by French artists of the 17th century, featuring extensive documentation of fourteen canvases by Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and Claude Lorrain (ca. 1604-1682) along with twelve works by Vouet, Dughet, La Hyre and seven other painters. In addition to biographies of the artists, color reproductions of the exhibited paintings, illustrations of numerous related works and detailed commentaries, the catalogue includes four introductory essays discussing the character of art in France during the 1600s and the importance of sojourns in Rome to the careers of Poussin, Claude and other French artists of the period.
