Thoroughly investigates links between Surrealist theories of automatism and the emergence of innovative forms of expressive abstraction in European art in the decade following World War II, presenting fine color reproductions of some 130 paintings and works on paper by Appel, Jorn, Constant, Masson, Michaux, Riopelle, Hantai, Wols, Millares, Saura, Baj, Crippa, Fontana and some 50 other noted figures. Nine essays include discussions of the critical debates surrounding the theory of automatism (originally formulated in the 1920s by Andre Breton), the interconnected explorations of automatic principles by artists throughout postwar Europe, the central role of COBRA painters in establishing an aesthetic distinct from both Surrealism and abstraction, and the manifestations of automatism in Italy and Spain.
