Accompanying an ambitious exhibition of 18 installation pieces created for sites throughout the city of Charleston, this catalogue presents fine pictorial and textual documentation of diverse works by an international group of 23 artists including Christian Boltanski, Lorna Simpson, Chris Burden, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Cindy Sherman, David Hammons and Antony Gormley. Essays discussing the history of Charleston (accompanied by photographs of the city by John McWilliams) and the rise of public site-based exhibitions preface individual texts explicating the artistic and historical issues addressed in the featured projects, which range from an installation of hundreds of small terra-cotta figurines in an abandoned jail to a display of photographs and artifacts evoking the role of black nursemaids in the lives of the Southern aristocracy.
