Examining the ambivalent attitudes toward society and personal identity reflected in the cultural and historical allusions prevalent in contemporary art, this catalogue features some 70 installation pieces, sculptures, photographs, paintings, videos and other works by 23 international artists and artist teams, among them Sophie Calle, Jeff Koons, Mike Kelley, Jenny Holzer, Boyd Webb and Saint Clair Cemin. Fine reproductions of the exhibited pieces are accompanied by three critical essays, concise individual commentaries on the artists, and an anthology of 34 theoretical and literary texts excerpted from the writings of such figures as Sartre, Jung, Calvino, Fellini and Smithson.
