Presents excellent color reproductions of more than 100 drawings, watercolors and paintings produced by Georges Rouault (1871-1958) during the first major stage of his career, illustrating the development of the French artist's distinctive mode of Expressionism and his initial explorations of the religious and humanistic themes which were to dominate his oeuvre. Seven essays discussing Rouault's early career, patrons and associates, his interest in ceramics, and the influence of Cezanne on his work are supplemented by a lengthy biographical chronology, an anthology of critical texts, and transcriptions of the artist's correspondence with his mentor Gustave Moreau.
