The first major examination of American artist Harnett (1848-1892) and the highly illusionistic style of still-life painting he pioneered, this catalogue comprises an anthology of 22 scholarly essays exploring the artist's development; the style, themes and long critical neglect of his trompe l'oeil compositions; and the cultural significance of his work's strong popular appeal in 19th-century America. Full-page reproductions of the 49 exhibited paintings and illustrations of many related works are interspersed throughout the texts, which include detailed discussions of the musical, literary, hunting, fruit and vanitas motifs that figure prominently in Harnett's still-life tableaux.
