Presenting a substantial study of the multifaceted career of French playwright, poet, novelist, draughtsman, film director and critic Cocteau (1889-1963), a central figure in the Paris art world from the 1910s to the 50s, this catalogue features illustrations of some 200 works by the artist (including self-portrait sketches, lyrical studies of mythological themes and theater designs) along with more than 100 paintings, drawings and sculptures by such associates as Picasso, Zadkine, Picabia and Modigliani. Seven essays trace Cocteau's links to the artists of Montparnasse, his achievements as a draughtsman, and his contributions to avant-garde music, dance, theater and film.
