RENE MAGRITTE: LA PERIODE "VACHE" (Rene Magritte: The "Vache" Period). Musee Cantini, Marseille, 1992. Published by Musees de Marseille in association with Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris, and Ludion, Brussels. 168 pp. with 118 ills. (58 col.). 30 x 24 cm. LC 93-216573 ISBN 2711825914 In French.
Documents a partial reconstruction of Magritte's controverisal 1948 Paris exhibition in which the Belgian Surrealist (1898-1967) deliberately challenged the artistic conventions of the time by presenting garish, caricature- like paintings and gouaches dramatically unlike his earlier or later work. Augmented by an anthology of letters, reviews and other documents related to the original show and a facsimile of its catalogue, six critical texts closely analyze the significance of the brief experimental "vache" phase of Magritte's career and discuss the art historical context of the works, linking them to Neo-Expressionism and other movements of the 1980s.
