The first substantial appraisal of the influence of the Rococo style on pre-Revolutionary American decorative arts, this scholarly catalogue examines in detail the appropriation of European ornamental motifs by craftsmen and architects in the primary Colonial centers (New England, New York, Williamsburg, Charleston and Philadelphia). Illustrations and analyses of 173 works are integrated within five extensive historical essays profiling numerous artisans and discussing the Rococo elements embodied in the furniture, silverwork, engravings, architectural elements and objects in cast iron, glass and porcelain presented in the exhibition.
