Presents a diverse array of 160 paintings and drawings depicting Hawaii and its people, including sketches documenting Cook's 1778 exploration of the Islands, 19th-century portraits of prominent figures in Hawaiian history, dramatic landscapes by French painter Jules Tavernier (1844-1889) and compositions by Georgia O'Keeffe and other 20th-century artists. Lengthy individual discussions of the works augment four detailed essays describing early topographical views and ethnographic images of the Islands and chronicling the rise of the late-19th-century Volcano School and the development of Hawaiian Modernism.
