LEONORA CARRINGTON: THE MEXICAN YEARS, 1943-1985. Mexican Museum, San Francisco, 1991. Distributed by University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque. 48 pp. with 22 ills. (11 col.). 30 x 23 cm. LC 91-34314 ISBN 1880508001 In English.
This slim catalogue surveys more than four decades of work in Mexico by British-born artist Carrington (b. 1917), illustrating eleven paintings and several other pieces by the noted Surrealist artist and writer which variously reflect the influence of Celtic and Mexican folklore, Renaissance painting, Catholic mysticism and the occult. Supplemented by an interview with Carrington, a substantial critical essay discusses her artistic accomplishments and her links to such Surrealists as Ernst and Breton while also tracing the independent development of her oeuvre in the context of her personal experiences and feminist concerns.
