PARABLES AND OTHER ALLEGORIES: THE WORK OF MELVIN CHARNEY, 1975-1990. Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, 1991. Distributed by MIT Press, Cambridge. 214 pp. with 231 ills. (92 col.). 26 x 27 cm. LC 91-66303 ISBN 0262531100 In English.
Surveying the career of an avant-garde Canadian architect/artist whose works frequently constitute controversial metaphorical commentaries on issues related to urban life and architecture, this catalogue documents some 30 theoretical or realized projects designed by Charney (b. 1935) since 1975, presenting reproductions of his expressive drawings along with photographs of architectonic gallery installations and site-specific public constructions. Commentaries by Charney (many reprinted) describing the featured works supplement an interview with the architect and two substantial essays that elucidate the political, social and architectural concerns underlying his confrontational interdisciplinary approach.
