Presenting works drawn largely from the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Mint Museum, this catalogue documents some 30 religious paintings, ten polychromed wooden devotional sculptures and examples of silverwork, furniture and coins produced in Spanish South America primarily in the 18th century. Good reproductions and informative discussions of the works are prefaced by two essays surveying the history of Spain's colonial empire and analyzing the unique fusion of Spanish and indigenous artistic traditions achieved by the celebrated painters of the Peruvian city of Cuzco.
