OP ON KAWARA: DATE PAINTINGS IN 89 CITIES. Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, 1991. Organized in association with Deichtorhallen, Hamburg; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. 256 pp. with 110 ills. (103 col.). 28 x 23 cm. LC 94-115507 ISBN 9069180839 Trilingual in Dutch, English and German.
Features full-page reproductions of 89 monochromatic paintings produced in cities around the world from 1966 to 1991 by noted Japanese-born Conceptual artist Kawara (b. 1933), each work consisting of meticulously rendered notations of the date on which the painting was executed and a cardboard storage box lined with a page from a local newspaper that "authenticates" the time and place of the work's creation. Three texts (one reprinted) discuss the fundamentally personal although anonymous character of Kawara's oeuvre and survey other works the artist has systematically produced since the 1960s, such as his telegram series I am still alive and his daily postcards I got up.
