Documenting the first exhibition devoted to French genre artist Lancret, a highly successful court painter long regarded mainly as an imitator of Watteau, this scholarly catalogue presents excellent color reproductions of 21 paintings (primarily depictions of aristocratic fetes and diversions) and a selection of 16 chalk sketches. Illustrated with many related works by the artist, the lengthy text reappraises Lancret's achievements and influence, emphasizing his distinctive narrative style and sophisticated techniques while discussing his apprenticeship with Claude Gillot (1673-1722), his friendship with Watteau, his numerous royal commissions and his frequent use of themes inspired by the theater and by popular prints of the period.
