Focused on a specialized genre developed almost exclusively by Dutch artists during the 17th century, this catalogue examines the history of architectural painting in the Netherlands through a presentation of 64 works (most of them views of church interiors) by 20 artists, including 16 paintings by the Haarlem master Pieter Saenredam (1597-1665) and representative pieces by De Vries, Van Steenwijck, De Witte and Delft painters Houckgeest and Van Vliet. Full-page reproductions and lengthy analyses of the featured works are augmented by four essays discussing the appeal of Dutch architectural painting to collectors of the period, its distinctive manifestations as a court style in The Hague and London, and the 17th-century significance of the term "perspective."
