The first substantial examination of the unusual career of German-born artist William Berczy (1744-1813), an accomplished portraitist active in the Hapsburg and Bourbon courts who emigrated to North America in 1792 as the head of a group of settlers and established himself as one of the finest artists in early Canada. Featuring illustrations and individual discussions of nearly 100 watercolor miniatures, paintings and drawings by Berczy and some 40 works by his son and daughter-in-law, the scholarly catalogue includes detailed chronicles of the painter's career in Europe and Canada, a discussion of his activities as a land speculator and settlement administrator, and supplemental texts evaluating his pastel portraits and his materials and techniques.
