Documenting the first extensive survey of Ukrainian painting to be seen in the West, this catalogue features full-page color reproductions of 118 works: Byzantine-influenced icons and other Christian images dating from the 15th through the 17th century; 18th-century portraits and Baroque icons; 19th-century Romantic tableaux; Impressionist works from the turn of the century; and some 60 diverse compositions dating from the first half of the 20th century, including avant-garde paintings by such figures as David Burliuk, Alexandra Exter and Vasilii Ermilov. Commentaries on the artists and the featured works supplement nine essays by Western and Ukrainian scholars which include a wide-ranging discussion of developments in Ukrainian painting, individual summaries of the major periods represented in the show, and two texts describing the achievements of early 20th-century artist Mykhailo Boichuk (1882-1937), who established a school of monumental painting grounded in Byzantine and Ukrainian folk traditions.
