Surveying Late Gothic German sculptures drawn from more than 20 museums throughout France, this catalogue documents a selection of 78 works that includes numerous polychrome wood carvings (free-standing figures, reliefs and retables) and several stone and terra-cotta pieces, encompassing sculptures by such artists as Niclaus von Leyden, Tilman Riemenschneider and Gregor Erhart and by many anonymous figures. Excellent reproductions and lengthy analyses of the featured works are prefaced by an introductory discussion of the status and techniques of sculptors in 15th- and early 16th-century Germany and an essay tracing the evolution of regional styles over the period.
