ALBERTO GIACOMETTI: SCULPTURES, PEINTURES, DESSINS (Alberto Giacometti: Sculptures, Paintings, Drawings). Musee d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1991. Published in association with Paris-Musees. 464 pp. with 406 ills. (133 col.). 28 x 23 cm. LC 92-171912 ISBN 2879000564 In French.
This significant exhibition provided a balanced overview of Giacometti's notable achievements in several media through a presentation of some 115 sculptures, 65 paintings and 130 drawings spanning the career of the Swiss-born artist (1901-1966), encompassing his early Cubist and Surrealist works but dominated by portraits and depictions of elongated figures representative of his postwar oeuvre. In addition to nine essays that range from general appraisals of Giacometti's development and the meditative dimension of his aesthetic concerns to discussions of specific compositions, the catalogue features numerous individual commentaries on the featured pieces, several texts by the artist, an anthology of writings on his work by Sartre, Breton and others, and a series of homages by contemporary sculptors.
