PAUL SOLDNER: A RETROSPECTIVE. Mary Davis MacNaughton et al. Lang Gallery, Scripps College, Claremont, 1991. Distributed by University of Washington Press, Seattle. 128 pp. with 93 ills. (35 col.). 28 x 22 cm. LC 91-53090 ISBN 0295971592 In English.
Reviewing the career of noted West Coast ceramist and teacher Soldner (b. 1921), this catalogue features full-page reproductions of 74 works dating from the mid-1950s to 1990 which illustrate the artist's innovative use of raku firing techniques in creating vessel-form objects and wall-mounted and pedestal abstractions. Three essays discuss Soldner's role in promoting experimentation in American ceramic art and developing new production equipment, his experiences as an early student of Peter Voulkos, and his long and influential tenure as an instructor at Scripps College.
