COMMENT: Documenting an expanded version of the 1991 Martigny exhibition of works by Chagall drawn from Soviet museums (Worldwide 22982), this catalogue presents more than 250 paintings, drawings and etchings produced by the artist early in his career, among them some 80 works from Western collections not included in the Swiss show. Features full-page reproductions of more than 160 paintings and drawings, numerous documentary photographs, fifteen wide-ranging essays (most specially prepared for the Frankfurt catalogue), and a selection of Chagall's letters illuminating his experiences as an artist and teacher in Russia from 1914 to 1922.
