Closely examining works related to Turner's three main tours of northern Europe, this scholarly catalogue documents 136 sketches, watercolors, engravings and paintings by the British artist (1775-1851), including 35 studies inspired by his 1817 visit to the Low Countries and the Rhineland and a series of 90 previously unresearched gouaches illustrating views from his 1839 travels along the Meuse and Mosel rivers. Includes individual commentaries on the exhibited works and a catalogue raisonne of the gouaches as well as four essays that carefully trace Turner's activities during the three tours and discuss the cultural history of the Rhine, Meuse and Mosel regions and their appeal to travelers in the Romantic period.
