Focusing on the investigation and portrayal of movement by photographers and artists of the 19th century, this catalogue presents an array of more than 100 works, including serial photographic motion studies by such noted figures as Marey (1830-1904) and Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) as well as sculptures, drawings and other art works in which men and animals in motion are a primary theme. Five essays examine the role of photographers (particularly Marey) in the scientific analysis of movement, discuss the endeavors of Delacroix, Degas and other artists to accurately represent motion, and describe early experiments in the creation of moving images.
