Thoroughly documenting the first major exhibition to explore Picasso's involvement with the Surrealist movement, this catalogue presents full-page reproductions and individual descriptions of 102 stylistically diverse paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures drawn from the Musee Picasso in Paris and numerous international collections. Twelve essays (four of them reprinted) examine Picasso's distinctive adaptations of Surrealist aesthetics and discuss a broad range of topics related to his work of the late 1920s and the 1930s, including his relationship with Andre Breton, the character of his poetic writings, and the psychological significance of the erotic, aggressive and archetypal forms that pervaded his imagery during the period.
