The flourishing of art under the enlightened Este rulers of mid-15th-century Ferrara is surveyed in this scholarly catalogue, which examines conventions of court portraiture and the production of illuminated manuscripts and panel paintings during the period as well as the interior decoration scheme of the studiolo in Belfiore, the Este summer palace. Four of the six panel depictions of the Muses (attributed to Cosimo Tura) which figured prominently in the studiolo are illustrated and extensively documented along with more than 100 objects ranging from coins, portrait medals and decorative art works to manuscripts and paintings. Some twenty essays discuss aspects of political and social life at the Este court, royal patronage of artists and scholars, the development of the studiolo tradition, and iconographic, historical and technical features of the Belfiore paintings.
