ARNOLD SCHONBERG: DAS BILDNERISCHE WERK/ARNOLD SCHOENBERG: PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS. Ed. by Thomas Zaunschirm. Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts, Vienna, 1991. Organized and published by Ritter Verlag, Klagenfurt. 454 pp. with 337 ills. (156 col.). 29 x 23 cm. LC 92-137576 ISBN 3854150911 Bilingual in German and English.
The first full presentation of the paintings and drawings of Austrian avant-garde composer Schonberg (1874-1951), this scholarly catalogue documents some 270 works (most produced prior to World War I) reflecting his involvement in the progressive art world of early 20th-century Vienna. Three detailed essays and ten reprinted texts illuminate Schonberg's interest in painting and the visual arts, describe his links to Kandinsky, and evaluate the problematic art historical status of his self-portraits, semi-abstract visionary images and expressive landscapes.
