PROUST ET LES PEINTRES/PROUST ILLUSTRE (Proust and the Painters/Proust Illustrated). Musee de Chartres and Musee Marcel Proust, Illiers-Combray, 1991. 538 pp. with 243 ills. (145 col.). 29 x 26 cm. LC 92-102312 In French.
Illuminating the broad-ranging artistic interests of celebrated French author Marcel Proust (1871-1922), the two-part exhibition documented in this catalogue presented 129 paintings, drawings and other works by the artists mentioned in Proust's novels or discussed in his critical texts along with a selection of illustrations for notable editions of his books. A lengthy biographical essay and a detailed analysis of the development, character and significance of the novelist's aesthetic interests and philosophy precede good reproductions of works by Mantegna, Poussin, Turner, Moreau, Monet and a host of other major and lesser-known figures from the Renaissance to the early 20th century, each illustration accompanied by a related excerpt from Proust's writings.
