This major study of the influence of French art and culture on the work of Edvard Munch (1863-1944) documents 46 paintings, nearly 50 drawings and more than 75 engravings, lithographs and woodcuts by the Norwegian artist along with 20 paintings and 34 woodcuts by Munch's French contemporaries, including Gauguin, Derain, Serusier, Bernard, Redon and Bonnard. Incorporating new research based on letters, manuscripts and previously unpublished entries from Munch's journals, the scholarly and well-illustrated catalogue features more than 30 texts exploring such topics as Munch's artistic activities and critical reception in Paris from the late 1880s to 1905, his synthesis of elements of Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism and other late 19th-century French styles, and the influence of the French theater on his work.
