Thoroughly reviews the radical restructuring of Paris accomplished during the 1850s and 60s under the direction of Georges-Eugene Haussmann (1809-1891), a controversial administrator appointed by Napoleon III who designed the axial network of thoroughfares in the city, commissioned major classical and Beaux-Arts building projects, greatly expanded public park areas, and supervised the construction of a massive municipal sewer system. Illustrated with period maps, architectural drawings, prints and paintings as well as numerous historical photographs, the catalogue features more than 40 informative essays which discuss Paris in the decades preceding Haussmann's sweeping changes, describe his transformation of specific sites in and around the city, and address a wide range of related topics including the financing of the monumental project, the contributions of municipal engineers and architects, and the immediate impact and long-term influence of Haussmann's achievements.
