OP MARTIN PURYEAR. Neal Benezra and Robert Storr. Art Institute of Chicago, 1991. Published in association with Thames and Hudson Inc., New York. Reprinted 1993. 160 pp. with 101 ills. (47 col.). 28 x 28 cm. LC 91-65308 ISBN 0500277028 In English.
Featuring a fine pictorial presentation of 40 elegantly crafted organic abstractions produced since the mid-1970s by prominent African American sculptor Puryear (b. 1941), this catalogue offers the first major survey of a Minimalist-inspired but highly allusive body of work which encompasses large free-standing and wall-mounted pieces variously composed of painted or unfinished wood, tree branches, rawhide strips and wire mesh. Two critical essays thoroughly discuss Puryear's contemplative oeuvre in its art historical context and examine the evolution of his aesthetic interests, particularly as influenced by his sojourns in Asia, Scandinavia and West Africa.
