NANCY GROSSMAN. Arlene Raven. Hillwood Art Museum, C.W. Post Campus, Long Island University, Brookville; Sculpture Center, New York; and Exit Art, New York, 1991. Published by Hillwood Art Museum, C.W. Post Campus, Long Island University, Brookville. 144 pp. with 139 ills. (29 col.). 28 x 28 cm. LC 91-19710 ISBN 0933699220 In English.
This well-illustrated catalogue documents the first major survey of the provocative oeuvre of New York artist Grossman (b. 1940), whose work since the late 1960s has been focused on themes of constrained violence and psycho-sexual tension, most frequently embodied in realistic wooden sculptures of male heads tightly sheathed in elaborate leather masks and hoods. Illustrations of 50 sculptural objects and some 75 diverse assemblages, collages, drawings and prints are interspersed throughout a lengthy text discussing the origins of the artist's style and themes, key works and phases in her career, and the psychological and existential issues informing her controversial imagery.
