FORNASETTI: DESIGNER OF DREAMS. Patrick Mauries et al. Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1991. Published by Thames and Hudson Ltd, London. Published in the U.S.A. by Bulfinch Press, Little, Brown and Company, Boston. 288 pp. with 537 ills. (123 col.). 31 x 23 cm. LC 91-55247 ISBN 0821218727 In English.
This richly illustrated catalogue surveys the unconventional oeuvre of Milanese designer Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988), an independent figure who transformed a wide variety of standard forms (chairs, beds, cabinets, screens, clothing and housewares) into art objects through the application of illusionistic decorations including architectural elevations and a host of idiosyncratic emblems. An appreciation by Ettore Sottsass, a 1987 interview with Fornasetti, and eight brief chapter essays discussing his career and primary motifs (such as playing cards, fish, flowers, women's faces and suns) accompany briefly captioned illustrations of drawings, prints and sketches by the artist and photographs of his diverse creations.
