Documenting the foremost among the international exhibitions organized in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Guercino's birth, this scholarly catalogue features full-page reproductions and lengthy individual analyses of 152 paintings by the Italian Baroque artist along with 41 canvases by members of his workshop. Three essays examining the work of Guercino and his circle are supplemented by six texts which evaluate distinct phases in the painter's career and by biographies of the eight other artists represented in the exhibition. All but one of the texts presented in the catalogue are included in the publication issued to accompany the reduced version of the show mounted at the National Gallery in Washington (Worldwide 23489), which features documentation of 51 of the paintings displayed in Bologna and a new essay discussing Guercino's iconography and stylistic development.
