OP CARLTON HOUSE: THE PAST GLORIES OF GEORGE IV'S PALACE. Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, London, 1991. 280 pp. with 234 ills. (39 col.). 22 x 20 cm. ISBN 095133736X In English.
Featuring illustrations and descriptions of more than 30 paintings and some 160 ornate decorative objects and furnishings displayed in Carlton House prior to its demolition in 1827, this catalogue documents the extravagant refurbishings of the palace undertaken during the long residence of George IV (1762-1830) prior to his accession to the throne in 1820. An essay tracing the complex history of the Prince's constant architectural alterations to the mansion introduces discussions of the furniture, porcelain, metalwork and arms he amassed (most reflecting his preference for French styles) and of his patronage of such painters as Gainsborough, Wilkie and Stubbs.
