ROBERT SMITHSON UNEARTHED: DRAWINGS, COLLAGES, WRITINGS. Eugenie Tsai. Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery, Columbia University, New York, 1991. Published by Columbia University Press, New York. Columbia Studies on Art, Number 4. 226 pp. with 110 ills. (8 col.). 28 x 22 cm. LC 91-19698 ISBN 0231072597 In English.
Expanding the study of Smithson's oeuvre beyond the Minimalist sculptures and pioneering earthworks for which he is best known, this catalogue features illustrations of figurative drawings and allusive collages by the influential American artist (1938-1973) along with an anthology of his previously unpublished writings and transcriptions of a series of interviews (1969-70). A substantial essay reexamines Smithson's themes and career in the light of the exhibited works, which range from early expressionistic drawings reflecting the artist's disparate interests in literature, mythology and natural science to sketches and diagrams for his sculptural projects of the late 1960s and early 70s.
