LE MOIS DE LA PHOTO A MONTREAL (The Month of Photography in Montreal). Musee d'art contemporain and 20 other sites, Montreal, 1991. Organized and published by Vox Populi, Montreal. 164 pp. with 65 ills. 31 x 25 cm. ISBN 2980160814 Bilingual in French and English.
Autobiographical trends in recent photography are explored in this catalogue through reproductions of avant-garde and documentary images by 45 artists (the majority from Canada) interspersed among ten texts, which range from poems and personal commentaries to theoretical essays on the nature of the medium. Among the topics discussed are the relationship of autobiographical photography to the films of Hollis Frampton, Robert Frank and others; the conceptual links between the body imagery of Austrian artist Rudolf Schwarzkogler and Edvard Munch's self-portraits; and the serial narration of self-referential themes integral to the recent work of Canadian photographer George Steeves. The catalogue also includes supplemental sections devoted to contemporary Mexican photography and to images of Latin America by six emerging Canadian artists.
