Extensively reviews the development of avant-garde trends in the 1970s as reflected in the emergence of Dusseldorf as a major art center during the period, presenting more than 100 diverse works by Beuys, Haacke, Gerz, Kirkeby, Dahn, Paik, the Bechers and some 15 other noted artists with ties to the city or its progressive art institute. Seven diverse essays discussing Beuys's dominant influence on art of the decade, the rise of conceptual approaches, and innovations in video, performance and installation art preface analyses of each artist's work and a series of twelve texts (including an interview with Beuys) describing the political, social and artistic events of the time. Complements a 1987 catalogue chiefly devoted to art in Dusseldorf during the 1960s (Brennpunkt Dusseldorf, 1962-1987: Joseph Beuys, Die Akademie, Der allgemeine Aufbruch, Worldwide 21271).
