DANNY LYON: PHOTO, FILM. Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, Tucson, 1991. Organized in association with Museum Folkwang, Essen. Published by Edition Braus, Heidelberg. 188 pp. with 169 ills. 30 x 24 cm. ISBN 3894660171 In English.
Illuminating the socially committed but non-polemical documentary oeuvre of American photographer Lyon (b. 1942), this catalogue presents nearly 150 black-and-white prints and film frames which reflect the artist's direct involvement with marginalized groups in American society, including images of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, studies of bikers and street youths, views of condemned New York buildings, portraits of Haitian workers and Texas prison inmates, and autobiographical photomontages. Three critical essays detail Lyon's career and discuss his photography and independent filmmaking in relation to his interest in American subcultures, while a reprinted text by the artist and a 1989 interview clarify the personal viewpoints underlying his work.
